Join us for this special performance of  “Bach’s Mass in B Minor” , Conducted by David Leigh, with guest soloists; Elizabeth Hilliard  (Soprano), Sarah Busfield (Soprano), Katie Schofield (Alto), Jack Kinkead (Tenor) and Jeffrey Ledwidge (Bass).

There will be two performances on the 23rd & 24th of November, the concert begins at 8pm in the Examination Hall. Tickets are available at the Door, €15 or €10 [concession].

J. S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor

The Mass in B Minor is a musical setting of the Latin mass by Johann Sebastian Bach. The work is one of Bach’s last compositions, Bach assembled the Mass in its present form in 1749, just before his death in 1750. The Sanctus of the Mass in B minor dates back to 1724. The Kyie and Gloria had been composed as a Luteran Missa in 1733. To complete the work Bach composed  new sections of the Credo such as Et incarnatus est. These were his last major compositions.

The Composition was premiered by the University of Dublin Choral Society in Ireland in 1908,  and this is the first time in 25 years that the Choir performed this work. The Choir has been practicing very hard for these last few weeks and are especially looking forward to performing this beautiful piece.

The combined forces of Choral and the Guinness Choir soared with the colourful double fugue of the “Sanctus” while the precise playing of the Ulster Orchestra ensured that the sound of the menacing “Dies Irae” and “Tuba mirum” reverberated around the Grand Canal Theatre. A huge thanks also goes to the wonderful audience for their attendance and appreciation. The conclusion of this concert sadly brings an end to the 2010-2011 academic year for Choral. Be sure to arrive early in order to maximize rehearsal time as we reach this critical juncture in our preparations for the concert, which is now a mere week and a half away!

Also, don’t forget that we will be meeting at the Nassau Street Entrance to Trinity at 10.30am on Saturday Morning for our trip to Belfast to rehearse with the Ulster Orchestra, attendance obligatory!

Well done also to Dermot Frost, Charlie Kerrigan, Fionnuala Barrett and Joanna Staunton for winning the ‘highly commended’ prize. It was fantastic to see four quartets compete for the coveted trophy this year and we hope many of our members have been inspired to enter for next year! The committee would like to thank Mr David Brophy, Principal Conductor of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, for judging the competition.
