About Us

Founded in 1837, The University of Dublin Choral Society (UDCS) is the oldest and largest choir in Trinity College. We are a four part mixed voice choir, consisting of undergraduates, postgraduates and staff. Choral specialises in performing large-scale choral works with full orchestral accompaniment both within and outside the walls of Trinity College. We typically perform two concerts per year, with one in each of the main terms, Michaelmas Term and Hilary Term. We rehearse each week on Wednesday in Goldsmith Hall  from 7:30-9:30 under the direction of our professional conductor, David Leigh. We enthusiastically encourage people of all voices and ages to join the society. While any previous experience of choral singing or the ability to read music is advantageous, the most important requirements are to have a love of music and to be willing to put in hard work!

In addition to the main concerts, Choral organises a variety of other events throughout the year, such as:

  • Our annual performance of Christmas Carols in December
  • The Cherry Cup competition for vocal quartets each February, which is a great opportunity to perform in a small group
  • A trip to London each December to sing Handel’s Messiah in the Royal Albert Hall as part of a 3,500 strong choir!

We also have a small chamber ensemble, Choral + that puts on some small-scale concerts throughout the year, and also performs at private functions. In previous years, Choral + performed at the Long Room Hub, the Provost’s House and on TV3’s Ireland AM morning television show.

If you are interested in joining Choral, drop along to our stand in Front Square during Freshers’ Week (15-19 September) or just come along to our first rehearsal of the term, on Wednesday 24th September from 6.30pm in Regent House (just above Front Arch). Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
